Over the last weekend I have been organizing the 5th Mediahackday, which took place at the Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator in Berlin.
The idea of the hackathon is to bring together IT experts, product guys, designers and industry partners for one weekend to work on the future of one specific topic.
This time the hackathon was about „connected cars“. Already today more and more cars are equipped with a permanent internet connection and it is only a question of a few years until this will be the industry standard.
Connected cars will change the way we understand mobility dramatically! They will be self-driving, communicating amongst each other and enable various new features, that will make driving more eco-friendly, more secure and more comfortable.
During the Mediahackday that we organized together with Bosch, Ergo and IXDS (who were in charge of the incredible cool „Future of cars hardware lab“) and which was embedded into VDZ’s Digital Innovators Summit, about 120 participants worked on new ideas for the future of connected cars.
After 24 hours of coding and prototyping 20 projects were submitted and rated by a great jury with the industry experts Holger G. Weiss (Aupeo), Dirk Hoheisel (Bosch) and Simon Erdem (AUTO BILD).
Here I want to present some projects that I personally was most impressed by and which might deeply influence the future of cars.
An app that analyzes all the car data as well as the driver’s behaviour to provide him with helpful advice how to improve his driving.
The aim is to improve safety, to make driving more eco-friendly and to save money.
We all know the pain of finding a free parking spot. Sneak park integrates with your car and recognizes if you start your car to leave a parking spot. It immediately gives a notification to the app that shows the free parking spot to user users around, that are looking for a place to park their car.
Radio is and will be the most important way to consume media in cars. But more and more people are annoyed by linear mass programmes from traditional radio stations.
Mydio makes radio in cars more personal. Users define their favorite music (genres and artists) and the news topics they are interested in. And they define the ratio between music and news (which might change over the day; e.g. in the morning users are more interested in news, while in the evening they mainly want to listen to music)
Mydio then combines your favourite music from Spotify with news articles from BILD and Die WELT, which are presented to the user via a text-to-speech-engine.
Flow Optimizer combines car data (speed and position) with traffic data and information about traffic lights and helps you to find the correct speed for phased traffic lights (In German: „grüne Welle“).
Voice Controlled Car experience enables you to control your car just with your voice.
„Road tracking“ (over all winning project) brings gamification approaches to your car and gives you rewards for eco-friendly driving, doing breaks during long drives and delivering goods on routes that you would drive anyway.:

Overall we have been deeply impressed by the broad variety of hard- and software projects. They give a first idea of the disruption that will come to this industry sector within the next months.
